We are thrilled to introduce Awhi as our Member of the Month for August! Awhi has quickly become a vital part of our 312 Fortitude community with her unwavering dedication and consistent effort. Below is the nomination:
“I would like to nominate Awhi for Member of the Month. Awhi is one of the most consistent members of our gym. Every week, she makes amazing progress in her technique, strength, and endurance. In the short time she has been a member at 312 Fortitude, she has competed in the Open, the in-house competition at 6Movement, as well as Butterfly Effect, and now has her sights set on Fourtress. Awhi is an integral part of our 5:15 am crew, and her dedication and commitment to functional fitness has been nothing short of amazing.”
Q: What initially drew you to functional fitness and 312 Fortitude, and what keeps you coming back?
A: Watching a few friends smash out some in-house comps made me want to give it a go as well. My friends and the supportive community keep me coming back, as well as the cool owners who look out for us all. The constant learning, with so many movements in functional fitness that I find interesting and am keen to learn, keeps me motivated. Having goals to aim for and constantly making small wins towards them is incredibly motivating.”
Q: Can you share a highlight or memorable achievement from your time at 312 Fortitude?
A: “Getting my first kipping pull-up and toes-to-bar in the six months I’ve been here! The strength I’ve gained from doing functional fitness has been amazing.”
Q: What’s your favorite movement or exercise, and what do you love about it?
A: “Deadlifts! They’ve always been my favorite strength piece. But if I could do a muscle-up, that would be next on my list!”
Q: How do you maintain your motivation and enthusiasm for functional fitness?
A: “The constant learning! I want to be able to do all the movements and lift heavy in all aspects of weightlifting, not just in deadlifts. Competing has also been a huge motivator. I have a goal to one day compete in the intermediate or RX divisions.”
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of the gym?
A: “Hanging out with friends and family, especially in Taupo with my grandparents, and going out fishing.”
Q: Do you have a favorite book, movie, or TV series/show that you would recommend?
A: “I don’t watch much, but I still love The Blind Side, Coach Carter, and Freedom Writers. Always a good watch.”
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
A: “I would love to go to New York, try out the food, and watch some live slam poetry.”
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their functional fitness journey, what would it be?
A: “Just give it a go. Yes, it can be scary—it took me a while to build up the courage to join, but it’s been the best decision I’ve made. It’s okay to start at level one. Don’t be afraid to try something new. We all start somewhere, and you can only go up from there. You’ll be amazed at what your body can do.”
Thank you, Awhi, for your incredible commitment, positivity, and spirit. We’re lucky to have you as part of our 312 Fortitude family! Keep smashing those goals!
